Module A-117 is a combination module, including a digital noise generator and an 808 source.

The digital noise generator uses random sequences of square waves (18 step shift register with multiple feedback), whose rate can go from random clicks to pure noise. The colour of the noise is very different from the analog noise produced by the A-118. In addition to a manual setting, the rate can be controlled by an external clock - eg. VCO, LFO or MIDI clock. The 808 Source aims to re-create the sort of multi-oscillator array that was used in Roland's TR-808 and 606 drum machines as the basis of the sound of the hi-hat, cymbals and cowbell. The cowbell mix uses two oscillators, and the cymbals mix six.

Chimera is a granular synthesis module that specializes in drum sounds. It offers a wide range of detailed sample sources as well as its own synthesis engine. Firmware updates can be performed via USB.

The module features various samples called Surfaces. The samples are mainly metallic sounds:

The analog side is where crater gets it’s tone, it’s umf’ and it’s power. 

Like a 909 style kick drum, Crater’s analog section features a pitch envelope that ranges from snappy attacks, to lazer sounds, to disco toms.  1 volt per octave tracking and an amplitude envelope that  allows users to use Crater for classic 808 style hip hop bass lines as well as rolling techno kicks.  Speaking of rolling bass, Crater has a new feature we have yet to see on a dedicated kick drum module, which is the Sustain stage.  The sustain knob lets you dial in a sustain level that Crater will stay at as long as the gate is high.  Inspired by using samplers in “gate mode”, the sustain circuit lets you use gate length to sequence different kick lengths, while keeping your decay setting constant. This is perfect for getting multiple sounds from of one module.

The Digital side is where we feel Crater really becomes unique and ultra-useful in a live performance Eurorack system.

Crucible is a drum module that specializes in metallic sounds and cymbals and tries to recreate them as realistically as possible.

By using classic digital synthesis blocks such as delay and digital filters, Crucible can synthesise sounds in real time that resemble thinly struck pieces of metal.

Size, Pitch, Tone and Deform give the user the parameters to shape their cymbal as they wish. The Excite control allows the user to change their attack, completely altering Crucible's response. The Machine began as a quest to create a rich-sounding eurorack snare drum synthesis module to complement the existing Mutant Drums. The project quickly became too large and costly to justify the module being capable only of snare drum sounds. So, the decision was made to learn from the architecture of the TR-909’s snare and kick circuits, to develop a module capable of generating multiple forms of analog percussion, and various other effects.

Like the other Mutant Drums, the Machine has its roots in classic analog percussion synthesis. Even though it can create alien sounds, it still can deliver those classic 909 house snares and kicks if you want them. There are no microcontrollers in the Machine. The signals and waveforms are all generated by discrete components and ICs, for a distinctly analog sound, and user experience. Now redesigned by Erica Synths in collaboration with Hexinverter Electronique the module features a manual trigger button.

The Mutant Rimshot is a fully analog rimshot and clave generator inspired by the rimshot found in the legendary 909 drum machine; a triple bridged-T oscillator coupled with a state variable filter. The clave sound (not a feature of the original 909 rimshot) is achieved by using just one of the oscillators.

• VCF IN lets you blend the clave or rimshot with other sounds. Try adding some filtered noise for a more acoustic sounding rimshot, or for pseudo-snare type sounds.

Novel decay and filter mod controls 

• The MOD DECAY envelope controls the decay of the VCA envelope
• The VCF MOD attenuverter allows you to modulate the filter cutoff with the MOD DECAY envelope
• Alternatively, a switch on the back lets you modulate the filter cutoff with the pitch-controlled internal VCO, for filter FM style percussive hits.

A classic electro percussion synthesis design reborn as something completely different. Hexinverter wanted to recreate a classic hihat synthesis design as something new and exciting, so they took the super electro 808 circuit and transformed it into a powerful creative tool for modular synthesis.
